great for wool rugs, upholstery

gps review Petmate Pet Hair Magnet Yellow

Petmate Pet Hair Magnet Yellow

I love this thing. It effectively and efficiently removes the cat hair from my furniture. It works well on upholstery, cloth and suede. It does cause a bit of static on fleece. The tool itself is not anything remarkable. Just a hard plastic handle and a hard (non-flexible) plastic "blade." It is very easy to operate - just hold surface taunt and "scrape" and it does not ruin or mark my sofas in any negative fashion. It (obviously) takes some physical effort to remove the hair, but the results are really worth it. It works much better than sticky tape or rollers or really any other thing I have tried to remove cat hair from the furniture. I have two cats, both with short, dark hair. They shed a lot. So the Pet Hair Magnet is cheap and a minor miracle worker.

  1. This is the tool for those surfaces that seem to suck in pet hair and refuse to let it go. It's not a quick removal tool (think more along the lines of scrubbing a floor than vacuuming), but for things like wool dhurrie rugs, it saves the expense of frequent professional cleanings or and is quicker than trying to pull the hair up with those sticky tape fur removal things. It really does pull up tons of fur, even from deep in a rug.

  2. This product does a great job getting that pet hair that gathers between the carpet and baseboard. It is also good at cleaning places where it is impossible to vacumn. I used to have to move furniture to get at all of the places where my pet likes to sleep, but now I can just reach under with this little tool and clean up the hair.

Because it has a short handle and works by pushing the hair, it is impractical for cleaning large surfaces and so I will probably end up running out to get a rug rake as well. Despite this, I am glad that I purchased this handy little tool. Nothing else that I have tried does as good of a job at cleaning that pesky baseboard area.

  3. We've had ours for years, and it still works great. It really gets the fur and dust out of the carpet right next to a wall, or on steps. It's also great for couches. I couldn't imagine using it on every square foot of the carpet in an entire room... but it is wonderful for small jobs. We use it mostly to scrape the cat fur off of the couches, when they get too furry, or when company is coming over. It's much faster than using lint rollers. (Lint rollers work better for clothes, though.) The rubber blades have started to wear down, but we've had it for about 4 years now. It still works, but not quite as good as I remember when it was new. I will be buying another one soon!

2010 Edit: We did buy another one, and the newer Pet Hair Magnet works much better (because the rubber blades are new and not worn-down like our old, old one. We don't use it very much anymore, though, now that we have the SC Johnson Pledge Fabric Sweeper for Pet Hair . The Pledge Fabric Sweeper is easier to use, with less "elbow grease," and you don't have to touch the fur with your hand, since it stores the 'furball.' Pledge recommends throwing the whole contraption away when it is full and buying another one, but I refuse to do that. I just stuck the skinny crevice attachment of my vacuum cleaner up in there, and it sucked the furball mostly out. Then, I was able to easily pull the rest of the furball out. I still use the Pet Hair Magnet from time to time; it seems to be better for getting fur out of the carpet and especially near the baseboards. The Pledge Fabric Sweeper could not clean the carpet right next to the wall like the Pet Hair Magnet does - the Pledge is mostly just used for couches. I still give the Pet Hair Magnet 5 stars.

  4. It works by friction, and it does require common sense about how its working, along with some effort. You must rub vigorously and repeatedly, and repeating in the same direction. The hairs grab the rubber track on this thing more than the fabric, so it will eventuially come out. I have a dalmation--the absolutely worst-shedding short-hair dog on the planet. When this item went missing, I ordered another, even though my local pet store stopped carrying them.

I'm flabbergasted that anyone would rate this product lowly. My only guess is that they don't understand how its supposed to work, or are trying to use it in situations it isn't designed for, or maybe they are not pressing very hard, or swiping it once and expecting it to work by magic. It does require some effort--but I haven't found anything better for getting out absolutely every last hair.

For my micro-fiber faux-suede sofa, it works great; for my fabric car seats, it works great; for my low-pile carpet runners on my stair, it works great.

  5. It's just a simple 3-ridged squeegee product, but it works wonders. Very effective at getting pet hair, surface dust, and little particles off of rugs. We use this on our silk rug and other rugs on a regular basis to get rid of dog hair and dust from the surface. Just get on your hands and knees, use short squeegee motions, and the dirt just rolls up. When you're done, pick it up by hand and discard (I use a dustbuster to suck up the pile of dust). Everything is clean and soft afterwards. Doesn't harm surfaces and very easy to clean--rinse under water for a few seconds and let it dry.

  6. We have a large (ie: fat) cat that tends to shed quite a bit. Of course her favorite place to sit is on the back of the sofa cushion which results in a cushion that gets so hairy it starts looking like we have twin cats. We've tried various other hair remover products and also the wet rag technique and they just don't work very well.

After reading some of the positive reviews we decided to give the Petmate Hair Magnet a try. It's basically just a squeegy with a rubber edge. For such a simple design it works really good. It takes a little elbow grease but after a couple of minutes we had a hair ball the size of a grapefruit off the couch.

I would highly recommend this product if you want something that works. If you are wimp and scared of a little manual labor then try the next gimmicky product that probably won't work.

  7. We have a shedding cat for the first time and our Miele vacuum cleaner is working overtime trying to keep up with the amount of cat hair being deposited everywhere. We've tried just about every comb and brush made when I saw this brush on Amazon and bought it not based on anyone's recommendation. We are delighted to say - IT WORKS! I've used it on all the furniture, carpets, rugs, pillows and even some sweaters and pants, and the amazing thing really does pull up the pet hair and roll into a lump. It's easy then to vacuum or just pick up and toss away. No batteries, no cords, no nothing. - just comb/brush away and the pet hair is removed. Every shedding pet household MUST have at least one of these!

  8. I received this item well before time and in perfect condition. This product is wonderful. You just rub it along the area where you want to remove the cat hair and it pulls it up in a pile that can be thrown away. It works great on my carpet, but the handle isn't long enough. Would like to purchase one with a broom handle attached.
