We have had our Duros for over two years now. We got it originally because we had bedbugs and getting rid of them requires a lot of powerful vacuuming. Well, we got rid of all our bedbugs and two years later we're still happy with it.

Canister vs. Upright: We went with a canister vacuum over an upright because they are just more powerful. And in my experience, much easier to push across the floor because when you push the main cleaning head, you're leaving the heavy engine and the bag behind. All you have to push is the rotating brush head or whatever attachment you're using. You do sort of have to lug the canister around behind you as you finish an area, which is sometimes a pain. And the canister types are bulkier and more difficult to store, if you have limited closet space. But overall, as a mother of 4 who has used both kinds, I prefer the canister types.

Duros vs. other models: We picked the Duros because we wanted a good reliable maker. In two years of heavy use we have never had a mechanical problem (except that the rubber bumper pad keeps coming off). Also, we wanted the rotating brush head. It does make the head heavier than in some other canister models, and minimizes that advantage a little bit, but it really does help clean better. Ours has always worked fine and they've made it really easy to turn the brush off and on-- one foot button and a thumb button so you can use whichever you prefer or is convenient at a given time.

Best part: The super-powerful suction. Once time I noticed it losing power and I thought it was nearing the end of its vacuum life. Well, it turned out it had a sock AND a piece of upholstery foam stuck in the hose. Yet it was continuing to pick up dirt, dust, cat hair, paper, and even a pen, just a bit less energetically than usual. I tell you, it's a good thing this has adjustable suction, because some places in my house I have to turn it DOWN or it will pick up the entire rug and/or anything in its path that would certainly have been left behind by a lesser vacuum.

Canister-type vacuums may not be right for you, but I hate seeing this one badly reviewed just because of people not liking canisters. If you want a canister, I have not found any reasons not to be delighted with this one!

Bought this for the direct drive-tired of the belt models-it cleans like a charm have used every model over the years. This is the one. A little heavy though. Should be self propelled. But not bad. It is easy to clean. Very durable. Plan to buy another for my other house. I would recommend it to a friend. All models have bad reviews. There is no perfect product. Picks up pet hair. Can be used on tile. Long cord. Long hose. Quiet. Headlamp is a nice feature. Since using bagless vacuums my allergies have gotten better. The beater brush is more durable than those other models. It`s quiet and better made. This is an update-just bought another one for my other place. I sure don`t miss replacing belts and bags. It`s shocking it`s the only model with out belts. This is high quality at a lower cost than Dyson,Miele. The attachments work good. It cleans bare floors well. The latches are sturdy and well made and the bucket is easy to dump. The heavy feel is due to a well constructed machine with strong quality parts. Have never clogged the hose. The filter is a snap to clean. Yea-go buy a belt model-never again.

Convenient
I'm loving this more than shoving leaves in a garbage bag. I vacuumed a small pile of leaves and grass today with ease. You still have to empty the bag after you're finished, but I don't mind that at all.

Handling
Your hands could start to feel tired if you've been vacuuming for about 10-15 minutes because of the unit vibrating. It didn't bother me, but I noticed that I had to shake out my hands after long use, and I was good to go.

Blowing
After cutting the grass, I tried the blower function, and it worked just fine.

Vacuuming Trash
We get various forms of trash and debris in our yard after a windy night. I would not use this to vacuum up regular trash. Recently, I had a bunch of quarter-size pieces of Styrofoam in the yard, and I didn't want to rake them, so I decided to try it. It handled the Styrofoam without any problems because it is a soft material, but I don't recommend buying this for trash. Use this at your own risk for trash other than leaves and grass. I accidentally vacuumed a plastic sandwich bag today, and the metal impeller made a quick disturbing noise that startled me, but it didn't disrupt the performance of the vacuum. The noise was just from the speed of the impeller going against plastic.

Vacuuming Leaves
We have a town home with a small yard, so I don't know how convenient the bag attachment will be for someone with a large yard. I'm looking forward to using this during the fall season. I think I'm going to rake the leaves and then vacuum them versus going across the whole yard with the vacuum. I've procrastinated on the yard a handful of times, so I have leaves and other tree/yard debris that is kind of mashed into the ground from rainy days, and the vacuum will not suck up those leaves in one pass. You have to work at it, so I suggest raking your yard if you've procrastinated on keeping it clean.

All the things I hate about vacuuming... GONE!

This new Dyson is not a hassle at all. It is fast, quick, and sucks very well. I have vacuumed cobwebs from the ceiling and used it to dust all my electronic equipment. I went up the stairs with it in 25 seconds. That has always been a major pain to do.. but now I did it for fun. And I hate cleaning!

I read reviews before I buy and I also take into account a TON of STUPID. Look past the stupid and buy this one. I am so glad that I did. No one in my family has complained about holding in the trigger, that it doesn't pick up well, or that it scratches easily, etc... nor do we have any of the other complaints I have read here. When you are done wasting time with cheap crap and you want a good tool that is built to work and last, buy this one.

I have the Dyson Ball (which I LOVED and still do) and it now sits in the corner. I dust it occasionally with the new dc35. Thank you James Dyson!

Getting hard to find

Right after I got this little carpet clearer I went online and googled about carpet cleaning soap and how to make your own, because I wanted to see if there was an alternative to expensive carpet cleaning soaps. I found a lot of recipes, some more complicated than others. Some dead easy to make. The dead easiest was just plain warm water.

I couldn't believe that would work, that this little carpet cleaner and just plain warm water would get the dirt out. But holy moly, it does. Fill this with warm water and watch the dirty water come into the receptacle.

Yes, the receptacle is small and you have to empty it more than you would if you had a larger and much heavier machine, but it's just water, easy to dump, easy to refill. And this machine does a very good job of sucking the water up out of the carpet, so that it dries in just a couple hours, so now there is no excuse to not having those heavily trafficked areas as clean as the rest of your carpet.

In closing I should say that we don't wear shoes in our house. But somehow the carpet still gets dirty as evidenced by the dirty water this machine sucks up. I'm telling you this, because if you do wear shoes in your house and track in greasy dirt, then maybe my warm water solution won't work for you. But it works for us.
